Denver Foundation Helping Families After the Unimaginable
A car rolls up the driveway. A man in a uniform exits and ascends the steps to the front porch. In the window hangs a flag with a single blue star. The news is delivered and that home is shattered. As the family weathers the loss of their son, brother, or husband, the star changes to gold. Outside, life marches on; blind to the family’s grief. Time does not slack in moments of hardship or mourning. It grimly ticks on, oblivious to the suffering of a family who has lost someone in defense of our country.
For some families, this march is too much and they feel like they are drowning with no rescue in sight. The SEAKR Foundation’s mission is to help these local families burdened by the loss of their hero. It is a non-profit organization that financially supports Colorado military families whose spouse/parent has been killed or wounded in action in Iraq or Afghanistan. To date, 96% of the funds received have been distributed to military families in need.
The sad reality faced by veterans and their families is a cause that tugs on our hearts. The blog post before this one illustrates the need to give back to a community, a theme that SHIFT strongly believes in. We heard the call to serve this great cause and responded by participating in the SEAKR Foundation Miles For Our Military 5K. While there, we heard heart-wrenching stories and met some fantastic people whom we will not soon forget. Sacrificing an afternoon pales in comparison to the ultimate sacrifices paid by those in our military, however, partnering with more foundations like SEAKR can go a long way in causing fundamental good in our local communities.
